Travel Day to Mombasa

Day 54
6:30 Breakfast
8:30 Leave for the Coast
12:45 Lunch Stop
6:30 Arrive at Resort in Mombasa
7:30 Dinner

After breakfast we had a ceremony to say goodbye to the staff. "I wasn't going to cry until I reached Joseph (the cook) and he looked watery and told me to be firm, but I cried. I saw him, Alex and some other staff crying too. it was really emotional. We got some of their addresses."
It was a long ride to the coast. We were on a large 45 seat air conditioned bus with big windows. I read, listened to music, studied and chatted. We had a pack lunch of sandwiches and fruit for lunch. There were street vendors who weren't allowed to enter the picnic area "they stood along an invisible line holding up their stuff for sale" but we were allowed to go over to purchase souvenirs from them.
In Mombasa I noticed there was a large Muslim population, there were women covered head to toe in black robes. We switched from the large bus to 3 little buses. "It was very bazaar to be on the same level as people on the road after so long of traveling in our big trucks and being so high above everyone!" We took a short ferry ride across the harbor.
We are staying at a resort for the remainder of our trip. We are in villas with 2 bedrooms, 4 people in each room. Downstairs we have a living room and a small kitchen area that we're not going to need to use. "I had a shower - in a REAL shower - I almost didn't know what to do! I still turned off the running water between soaping up, I just can't stand the thought of wasting the water down the drain." The resort will set up a buffet for us but we still have our own water purification system. After dinner we went down to the white sand beach. "I put my toes in the Indian Ocean today!" 10 years ago today I was on the Kenyan Coast!
