| The Sunset of Socian |
Today was a long and dusty travel day. We drove through Timau town and then Nanyuki town which was very similar to Timau. There were children playing with tires in the school yard, rolling them around. I wrote about all the wildlife and trees we saw on this journey,
"There were many small Acacia trees and these random Q-Tip looking trees that were very tall. There were beautiful assemblages of Prickly Pear Cactus. We passed livestock like cows, sheep and goats. We saw camels! We drove right beside them. We also saw a giraffe in the distance and zebra. Baboons were right beside the road, they sat like grumpy men watching us. The beautiful yellow bark Acacia trees are called fever trees because they are often associated with malaria. The trees are found in areas with water and mosquitoes and people used to think that it was the trees that gave them malaria. The cactus trees are actually called Euphorbia trees and we saw these too." The ornithology professor was on our truck and he pointed out the various birds and their nests.

| Photographing the Sunset |
When we arrived at Socian and set up our tents, we were quick to pull out our cameras and photograph the sunset. It was like we were paparazzi, we were so click happy!! After dinner we sat outside looking at the trees by the river and the sky where the sun just set.
"Now we're in Africa!" I wrote in my journal. We had a site security meeting and were told to watch out for angry hippos, crocs, lions and leopards in the rocks!
10 years ago today I was privy to the most amazing sunset.
